The "Pictures at an Exhibition" project welcomes players at all levels, from absolute beginners with no orchestral experience at all to adult amateurs who will be able to tackle almost-original Mussorgsky parts. The music has been specially arranged by Katrina Gordon and parts will be published weekly on the SCO website. Practice video​s made by ensembles from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra will enable participants to play along to slower and faster versions of the musical arrangements. We will also publish ‘conductor chat’ videos each week with tips and challenges from Susie Dingle, and 'learner-friendly' videos to help the least experienced participants to join in and keep their place.

The full score for each movement can also be provided on request to group leaders or musical directors as a Sibelius file so that if you have unusual instruments (ukuleles, lever harps, etc) you can tailor the music to suit the needs of your group.

The project begins on Wednesday 9 September 2020 and materials will be published gradually in two 10-week blocks. You can of course join in at any point, and please do share photos or short videos with us on the SCO facebook page or by emailing them to [email protected].

At the end of the project in April 2021 the SCO team will host a celebratory online event for everyone involved, and our sincere hope is that groups will also be able to come together safely in person to play Pictures at an Exhibition by this point.

The Caithness Orchestra and Caithness Junior Orchestra are certainly planning a live event for April under the baton of Susie Dingle, so our fingers are tightly crossed for that. We'd love to hear from other orchestras who want to plan their own performances too.
